Hybrid Chestnut (Castanea x. - complex hybrid)

These seedlings originate from an orchard in upstate NY and may contain genetics from Castanea dentata, mollissima, crenata, and/or sativa.  They exhibit better blight resistance and produce larger nuts than pure American chestnut.  We've been growing them for six years now and have found that some of them do tend to burn back a few inches each winter, but carry on quite well the next year. The largest on our zone 5b property have already reached about 10' and flowered for the first time in 2023.  Plant them somewhere sheltered with full sun.
