Hybrid Chestnut (West Danby Hybrids)

Grown from seed originating in an orchard in upstate NY and may contain genetics from Castanea dentata, mollissima, crenata, and/or sativa. Parentage includes some of the more well known Chinese and hybrid varieties grown in the Eastern USA/Canada.  They exhibit better blight resistance and produce larger nuts than pure American chestnut.  We've been growing them for six years now and have found that some of them do tend to burn back a few inches in severe winters, but carry on quite well the next year. The largest ones on our zone 5b property have already reached about 12' and produced nuts for the first time in 2024.  Plant them somewhere sheltered with full sun.
