American Chestnut (Castanea dentata)

The American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was once one of the dominant tree species of the eastern United States before a fungal disease called chestnut blight reduced it to scattered survivors and recurrent re-sprouts.  Outside of its historical range there are examples of healthy trees, including in each of the Maritime provinces, but no location is completely safe from the blight.  Exhibits more cold hardiness than our hybrid chestnuts.

Note that we sometimes trim taller trees down to their described height in order to not have to pass additional shipping costs on to our customers. In our experience this has almost no effect on their growth even in the first year of growth after planting. The ample roots make sure of it!
